Recognizing and working with mixed agendas
The assumption at the core of traditional couples therapy is that both partners want to work on the relationship. In discernment counseling, we recognize that partners often come in with mixed agendas. Instead of trying to force a bonding process, we create space for both perspectives, helping each of you feel heard while exploring what’s possible with honesty and care.
-
Nurture and support for leaning-in partner without pressuring or judging leaning-out partner
Leaning-out partners often feel pressured and unheard in traditional couples therapy. This benefits no one! Discernment counseling supports the partner who wants to work on the relationship while also honoring the perspective of the partner who’s unsure. Both voices matter, and the process creates a respectful, balanced space without pressure or judgment.
-
Provides an honest assessment of strengths and weaknesses as well as a picture of potential repair
Discernment counseling offers an honest look at both the strengths and struggles in your relationship. Together, we explore what’s working, what’s not, and whether real repair is possible -- so you can make informed, compassionate decisions about the path forward.
-
Promotes productive conversation about relationship’s problems
If you or your partner are considering exiting the relationship, it's likely that you have some significant problems that seem impossible to change. Therapy offers a space to shift conversations about contentious issues so that you can ascertain whether or not they are truly deal-breakers.
-
Acknowledge and accept the reality of how each partner is experiencing the relationship currently
If your relationship is in distress, it's likely that you and your partner have very different views on what is going on. You may even spend a lot of time arguing over whose version is "correct." Discernment counseling begins by acknowledging the reality of how each partner is experiencing the relationship. By accepting where you each truly are, we create space for honest reflection, clarity, and compassionate next steps.

Provides support for couples who are not a good fit for traditional relationship therapy
Discernment counseling is designed for couples who may not be a good fit for traditional relationship therapy. Examples include on-again-off-again relationships, a history of ineffective couples therapy, or relationships with an ongoing active affair. I believe you are deserving of help, even if you don't "fit the mold!"
Together, we can explore whether to move forward together or apart with greater understanding and care.
